01 / The decision

What the result can—and cannot—tell you.

A microbiological result is not a normal product-comparison problem. Investigate the well and plumbing source, disinfect or repair as directed, and verify corrective action with follow-up testing.

Total coliform is commonly used as an indicator. E. coli has a different significance. Interpret the exact result with the laboratory, state program, or local health department.

Sampling error can contaminate a bottle, but an unexpected result should not be dismissed. Follow the official repeat-sampling and immediate-use instructions.

Flooding, loss of pressure, repairs, a damaged cap or casing, nearby waste sources, and seasonal conditions can change risk and trigger additional testing.

Repair and disinfection

Correct defects and disinfect the well or plumbing as directed. Treatment equipment should not hide an ongoing pathway into the well.

Validated UV

Where continuous UV treatment is appropriate, compare exact NSF/ANSI 55 class, validated flow, UV dose, alarm behavior, sleeve cleaning, and lamp replacement.

Pretreatment

Turbidity, hardness, iron, manganese, or color can interfere with UV performance. A qualified design may require pretreatment and a fail-safe response.

  • Buying a generic sediment or carbon filter for a confirmed microbiological problem.
  • Installing UV without confirming pretreatment, flow, alarm, power, and maintenance requirements.
  • Skipping follow-up laboratory testing after repair or disinfection.

Questions for any seller or installer.

  1. Is the system Class A or Class B under NSF/ANSI 55, and which application fits?
  2. What flow and water-quality conditions are required to deliver the validated dose?
  3. What happens during lamp failure, low UV intensity, power loss, or flow above the rated maximum?
